It Ends with Us is an emotional #1 Sunday Times bestseller novel by Colleen Hoover which was made into a major film starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
This novel portrays the character Lily falling in love and falling victim to domestic violence. One of the most talked about aspects of this story is how initially the violence appears ‘accidental’ until Lily discovers that her injuries are a result of her husband’s rage and are far from accidental.
There are many messages descending from this film, some of which include:-
If someone is hurting you, you deserve to be safe.
It is ok to ask for help.
You are not alone.
What can I do if I am in a similar position?
Ask for help. Women’s Aid[1] offers a range of support services, and will point you in the right direction, as well as offering a listening ear. If you do not feel safe, you can make an application for a Protection Order (a temporary Safety Order) in your local District Court or Garda Station.
A Safety Order is an instruction from the Court which stops a person accused of abusive behaviour from committing further violence or threats of violence. The Respondent does not have to leave the home.

A Protection Order is an interim order granted until the full hearing of a Safety Order application.
If the perpetrator breaches a Protection Order or a subsequent Safety Order, he or she can be arrested.
I am at risk in the family home.
If the Respondent resides with you in the family home, you can make an application for a Barring Order in the same way, which will afford the same protections as a Safety Order whilst removing the Respondent from the family home.
