Why You Should Make a Will

Making a Will is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your loved ones and ensure your wishes are carried out after you pass away. Without a valid Will in Ireland, your estate will be distributed under the rules of intestacy – meaning the law, rather than you, decides who inherits your assets. For many families, this can create unnecessary stress, disputes, and financial difficulties at an already emotional time.

By putting a properly drafted Will in place, you take control of what happens to your estate, reduce the likelihood of family conflict, and make the process of administering your estate much smoother for those left behind.

For many reasons, people will put off making a Will.

Reasons to Make A Will

  • Making a Will allows you to decide what happens to your assets when you die.
  • You can include any funeral wishes you may have in your Will.
  • You can set out specific items that you would like to leave to certain people.
  • You can include any charities you may want to benefit from your estate
  • You can consider the tax implications of what you intend to leave to people and the best way to structure your will from a tax point of view
  • You can decide who you would like to act as your Executor.
  • If you have minor children, you can include the details of the guardians who would look after your children if you died.
  • By setting out your wishes it can help reduce family disputes on how your estate should be dealt with.
  • Marriage will revoke a Will previously made unless the Will specifically stated it was made in contemplation of the marriage.
  • Separation or Divorce will not revoke a Will so it is extremely important to make a new Will following a Separation or Divorce.
